9 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a DJ for a Corporate Event in Houston
Hiring a DJ for a company event is different from hiring one for a birthday or a wedding. Your guests are coworkers, clients and leadership. There's usually a program to run, whether that's a welcome from the CEO, an awards segment or a raffle. And the entertainment reflects on the company. If you've been asked to book the DJ for a holiday party, a client appreciation night, an awards dinner or a company milestone in Houston, these are the questions worth asking before you sign anything.
We're OMG! Event Co., a DJ and photo booth company based in Tomball and serving Greater Houston. We put this list together from the questions corporate planners ask us, and the ones we wish more of them asked.
Before you call anyone: write a one-page brief
You'll get better answers, and quotes you can actually compare, if every DJ starts from the same information. Put these on one page:
- Event type and goal. Holiday party, client event, awards dinner, team celebration or conference reception. Is the goal networking, recognition, dancing or all three?
- Date, venue and address. Plus the venue's event contact, if you have one.
- Guest count and crowd. How many people, and roughly what mix of ages, departments or clients.
- Run of show. Arrival, dinner, speeches, awards, raffle, dancing and end time.
- Who's speaking. How many speakers, and whether anyone needs a wireless microphone or a podium.
- Extras you're considering. Lighting, a photo booth, a video wall for slides or a sponsor loop.
Send that brief with your quote request and every answer below gets easier.
1. "Do you also emcee, and how do you handle the program?"
At a company event, the microphone matters as much as the music. Ask whether the DJ will make the announcements, how they introduce speakers and how they keep the program moving if it starts running long. A good corporate DJ will want your run of show ahead of time, confirm name pronunciations and know who on your team gives the go-ahead for each segment.
At OMG!, every DJ package includes a dedicated professional DJ who also emcees your announcements, plus a planning call before the event to walk through the program.
2. "How do you keep the music work-appropriate?"
This is the question that keeps corporate planners up at night. Ask how the DJ handles clean edits, how they treat guest requests and whether you can send a do-not-play list. If your company has specific sensitivities, such as a mixed audience with clients, families attending or a particular culture to respect, say so up front.
You should also ask how they read a professional room. The best corporate sets start at conversation volume during arrival and dinner, then build once the formal part of the night is done.
3. "What equipment is included, and what do you need from the venue?"
Get the equipment list in writing. For a company event, you'll want to know:
- How many speakers and subwoofers, and whether that's right for your room and guest count.
- How many wireless microphones are included for speeches and awards.
- Whether lighting is included or an add-on.
- What the DJ needs from the venue: power, table space, setup area and load-in time.
Every OMG! DJ package comes with our pro sound system: 2 high-end speakers, 2 subwoofers and 2 wireless microphones.
4. "Can you work with the venue's AV team?"
Hotels, conference centers and corporate venues in Houston often have in-house audio or their own AV vendor for presentations. Ask the DJ whether they've coordinated with venue AV teams before, and whether the microphones and slides will run through their system, the venue's or both. Confirm who is responsible for what so nobody is surprised during the CEO's speech.
If your event is near Town Center, our Woodlands event page covers how we plan around large hotel and convention venues.
5. "Who exactly will be at our event?"
Some companies book one person on the phone and get someone else on the night. Ask for the name of the DJ who will be at your event and whether you'll talk with them before the day. Ask what happens if that person is unable to make it.
6. "How long is the package, and what if we run over?"
Corporate events have a way of running long. Awards take more time than expected, or the party is just going well. Ask how many hours are included, when setup happens relative to guest arrival and how extra time is handled if you need it. Every OMG! DJ package covers up to 4 hours, and we'll confirm the exact schedule and any extra time in your quote.
7. "Do you offer a photo booth or other add-ons?"
A photo booth is one of the easiest ways to get coworkers mingling outside their usual group. It's also a natural fit for holiday parties, themed events and client nights where you want guests leaving with something. Ask whether the DJ company offers one directly, because booking DJ and booth from one team means one point of contact and one timeline.
For bigger productions, ask about lighting, fog, a video wall for slides and sponsor logos, or a red carpet entrance.
8. "What does it cost, and what's the payment and contract process?"
Ask for an itemized written quote and the booking terms: the retainer amount, when the balance is due and the cancellation and rescheduling policy. Your finance or procurement team will likely want those details anyway.
Here's how our packages are priced:

9. "How far ahead do we need to book?"
The short answer: as soon as you have a date and venue. Company holiday parties cluster on a handful of December weekends, and spring and fall bring their own run of awards dinners and conferences. Reaching out early gives you the most options. We'll confirm your date on a quick call before anything is reserved.
A quick checklist for the week of the event
Once you've booked, send your DJ one final email with:
- The final run of show with times.
- Speaker names, titles and pronunciations, in order.
- Award categories and winners, or a sealed list if it's a surprise.
- Raffle details and who is drawing.
- Must-play and do-not-play songs.
- Venue contact, load-in time and parking instructions.
