Holiday Party Entertainment in Houston & Tomball: A Planner's Guide to DJs and Photo Booths

Somebody has to plan the holiday party. If that's you this year, whether it's the office party, the client appreciation night or the big family get-together, this guide covers the entertainment side: what a DJ actually does at a holiday event, when a photo booth is worth it, how to build a simple timeline, and what to ask before you book.

We're OMG! Event Co., a DJ and photo booth company based in Tomball and serving Greater Houston. Holiday parties are some of our favorite events, so here's what we've learned.

Start with the kind of party you're throwing

Holiday parties aren't one-size-fits-all, and the entertainment should match the room.

  • Office and company parties. A mixed crowd: different ages, different music tastes, and people who may not know each other well. The goal is a comfortable, fun atmosphere where people mingle, plus a few smooth announcements (welcome, dinner, awards, raffle). See our corporate event entertainment page for how we approach these.
  • Client appreciation nights. Polished and relaxed. Background music during networking, a short program, and something memorable guests take home.
  • Family and neighborhood parties. Kids, grandparents and everyone in between. Clean music, crowd-pleasers, and maybe a few line dances. Our private party page covers birthdays, milestones and get-togethers like these.

Knowing which one you're planning makes every other decision easier.

What a holiday party DJ actually does

A good DJ is doing more than playing a playlist. At a holiday event, expect your DJ to:

  1. Set the mood as guests arrive. Lower-energy music during check-in and cocktails so people can talk.
  2. Run the microphone. Welcome remarks, dinner announcements, awards, raffles and a heads-up before the party winds down. A clear, confident emcee keeps your program on schedule.
  3. Read the room. If the dance floor fills up, keep it going. If people are deep in conversation, don't drown them out.
  4. Handle your must-plays and do-not-plays. For company events this matters a lot. Clean edits and no surprises.
  5. Manage the sound. Microphones for speeches, speakers placed so the music fills the room without blasting the tables closest to them.

Is a photo booth worth it for a holiday party?

For most holiday parties, yes, especially office parties. A photo booth gives guests an easy reason to step away from their usual group and do something together. It gives quieter guests something fun that doesn't involve dancing, and it gives everyone a photo to keep or share.

A photo booth tends to work especially well when:

  • Your guest list mixes departments, teams or families that don't usually socialize.
  • You want a take-home memory without buying party favors.
  • You're hosting a themed party (ugly sweaters, black tie, decade themes) and want guests to show it off.

If your crowd is small or the event is mostly a seated dinner, a DJ alone may be all you need.

A simple holiday party timeline

Here's a starting point for a 4-hour evening event. Adjust it to your venue and program.

TimeWhat's happeningEntertainment
0:00–0:45Guests arrive, drinks, minglingBackground music; photo booth open
0:45–1:30Dinner or buffetDinner music at conversation volume
1:30–1:50Welcome, toasts, awards or raffleDJ emcees and handles microphones
1:50–3:45Party timeDance sets, requests, photo booth busiest
3:45–4:00Last song and send-offFinal announcement

Share your timeline with your DJ ahead of time. Even a rough outline helps them plan the music and the announcements.

Questions to ask before you book

Whoever you hire, ask:

  • What's included in the price? Hours, sound system, microphones, lighting, photo booth, setup and breakdown.
  • Who will actually be at my event? The name of the DJ or booth attendant.
  • Do you emcee? Can you handle awards, raffles and announcements?
  • What do you need from the venue? Power, space, load-in time and any venue rules.
  • How do you handle clean music? Especially important for company events.
  • What's the payment schedule? Deposit or retainer, balance due date, and cancellation terms in writing.

Tips for a holiday party people actually enjoy

  • Send your date early. Holiday weekends are popular for every kind of event vendor, so the sooner you reach out, the more options you'll have.
  • Keep the program short. Two or three speakers and a quick awards segment beats a 45-minute program.
  • Give people a reason to move. A photo booth, a short dance set after dinner or a raffle all get guests out of their seats.
  • Think about the end of the night. A last-call announcement and a clear final song make the ending feel planned rather than awkward.
  • Take care of the details once. Venue contact, load-in time, timeline, must-play list and dress code. Send them to your vendors in one email.
